Learning! It's what we do best. That, and have fun, discover, laugh, play, make friends, set goals, reach for the stars and generally just get on with the business of being fabulous every day.

Sergeant Allan Visits Room18
This week we had a visitor to tell us all about his job as part of our unit on Careers and Occupations. It was pretty cool! We found out so much about their important role in our community.
We liked how you told us that police officers have different jobs to do and there is a kid's jail as well. We also liked the part where we got to try the handcuffs. We think that you are a kind police officer. We liked the part where you told us that the taser has things like fish hooks and it sticks to your body. - Aakrish and Shyla
We really liked touching the equipment you brought in. We really liked putting our hands in your hand cuffs. Both of us enjoyed everything that we did with you.
We both loved having you teach us about police officers. We hope you can come again sometime this year. - Jisha and Amelia
We learnt police have pepper spray and they spray people who are running away from them. It was our first time looking at real things. The handcuffs were really interesting because they were not as heavy as I thought they would be. When we put on the handcuffs it was really amazing because it had been our first time putting it on. It had a key so we don’t get stuck. We liked the baton because it was amazing when you flick it, it is really cool. We also liked it because we got to shake it. - Aryan and Ayush
Some of the things a police officer needs are handcuffs, guns, pepper spray, police jacket and a radio. We now know more about police officers. We all hope you will always catch the criminals. - Jay and Eashan
Thank you for letting us have a try on your handcuffs and play with your baton as well and your other stuff. I did not know that your vest can be heavy. Or that there is a children’s jail. I did not know that, too. I never knew that police officers have a lot of equipment to fight criminals. Also, I did not know that police officers get a medal. You are the kindest policeman that we ever had. - Bailey and Amy
Mr Allan, we liked when you put the handcuffs on Room 18. We also liked the police officer baton and the pepper spray story. - Roelani and Aleeza
Thank you for taking your time to come in and teach us a lot of important parts of your police officer job. We really enjoyed the stories that you told us and thank you for answering our questions.
We learned a lot about your equipment. We learned there are lots of police who have a taser. We never knew that there were two wires in the taser. The two wires had to get into the skin to work and we never even knew a thing about that.
I thought that you had salt spray in the pocket but it was a pepper spray. The story that you told was really funny. It must have been annoying to have pepper spray in the eyes, maybe uncomfortable. Let’s hope that it does not happen again.
Those trials of real handcuffs were so cool! That was my first experience with a real pair of handcuffs. We hope we will have another chance to have a play with those handcuffs.
We loved your visit and all the stories you told us. We hope we will see you again. - Caleb and Ayaan

Dice in a Corner
Room 18 love Friday Maths challenges.
Here are some recent picks of us solving the "Dice in a Corner" challenge from the nrich Maths site. See link: Dice in a Corner
This is the challenge:
"Three dice are sitting in the corner with the simple rule that where two faces touch they must be the same numbers.
So, in the first picture above there are3 4 21
In the second picture above there are4 3 23
Use your own dice (you could use two or three or more...)
What total have you made?
Can you make a different one?
How many different ones can you make?
Now for a challenge - arrange dice (using at least 2 dice and up to as many as you like) in a line in the corner, so that the faces you can see add up to 18So, in the first picture above there are
In the second picture above there are
Use your own dice (you could use two or three or more...)
What total have you made?
Can you make a different one?
How many different ones can you make?
in as many ways as possible.
Each line of dice must be along or up a wall (or two walls). A line going up is counted the same as a line going along. Remember the dice must touch face to face and have the same numbers touching.
We are getting so much better at working together to solve mathematical problems. Collaborative capability is a great skill to have as it develops our ability to reason, justify and work towards a common goal.As you can see we had a lot of fun finding different spots to work in and discussing our strategies in a small group.

Arriving Early and Ready
It's so lovely to see the children quietly playing games, chatting and hanging out together before school.
This is such a great time of the day to get to know your classmates, spend some time doing fun activities with your friends and getting ready for the day ahead.
So why not leave home a few minutes earlier in the morning to be able to join in and really start the day well?

A letter from your teacher...
Dear Room 18 children,
How are you today? I am well - I had a lovely weekend on Great Barrier Island. Now I feel really relaxed and ready for the week.
I am very excited to be your teacher for 2017. I am looking forward to a year of learning, fun and adventure. I can’t wait to learn all about you but first of all, I will tell you a little bit about myself.
I was born in Auckland but the place I call home is Great Barrier Island. I grew up on Great Barrier and went to a small country school. There were only 12 children in my year group and we had our swimming lessons in the sea!
Much later, I went to Auckland University and did a BA and a few years later I did went back and became a teacher. After I qualified, I moved to London where I lived for 5 years. I did lots of travel while I lived there, but eventually I started missing NZ and my family too much so I came home.
I have been teaching at PCS since 2005. I have taught in Y0, Y1, Y2, Y3 and this is my fourth year in Y4. 2017 is my 3rd year as the Piwakawaka Team Leader. I had one year off being a teacher to stay at home and be a Mum but I really love teaching so I came back to work.
I live with my Mum (Mrs Rands-Trevor) and my five year old son William, and our cats Elmo and Princess. We live near the Botanic Gardens and WIlliam and I like to go for bike rides there. Other things I enjoy are reading, gardening, fishing, camping and hanging out with my friends and family.
In Rm18 we will be using Class Dojo, learning how to give peer feedback, have a new learning partner and seat every week, finding out all about growth mindset and lots more. I think we are going to have a fabulous year together and I look forward to this journey with you,
All the best,
Miss Rands-Trevor

KOS in Rm18
This explanation is about keeping ourselves safe. I will tell you about KOS in Rm 18.
KOS is a programme in keeping ourselves safe. We learn about techniques to keep ourselves safe.
We learnt how to walk tall when we are close to someone who might hurt you. When you walk tall you need to put your shoulders back and sometimes have eye contact with people.
We also learnt about what to do when someone is abusing you. When someone is abusing you should use STAR which means Stop, Think, Act and Report. There are different types of abuse such as family violence, sexual abuse, neglect, cyber abuse, physical abuse and emotional abuse.
For example, if someone said ‘I lost my cute little kitty can you help me find it?’ and you say yes that person might take you away and do something weird to you. That is a trick. Remember to ask your parents first.
If someone asks you ‘Can I have a picture of you naked? I’ll give you an iPad’ say no and tell an adult straight away. That is a bribe.
If mum came home with a black eye and she said ‘Don’t tell anyone dad punched me in the eye this is just a family secret’. That is a secret.
Thank you for reading our explanation about KOS. We hope you learnt how to be safe.

Sport in Term 3 @ PCS
Rugby
In my opinion you should join up to the rugby option.
If you are good at rugby you can play for your school and then play against other schools.
During rugby option, we tackled the tacklebag
RIPPA RUGBY
At Rippa Rugby zones, we played 5 teams but in total there were 8 teams.
From our class Kace, Areya and Lotosina competed.
We played really well against Puhinui. We beat them by 3 points.
Overall, we came fourth out of seven teams.
Cross Country
Earlier in the term, we had our school cross country and if you came in the first 10, then you qualified for zones.
When we went to cross country zones it was a 2km run. It was at Puhinui Reserve.
It was very steep and muddy. Some people got stuck in the mud.
In our class Areya and Manveer went to Zones. Areya came in 45th!
Areya thought it was very hard but still fun.
Gymnastics
On the 20th September 2016, we went to GYMCITY for Gymnastics. The stuff that we were doing was the mat routine, the bar and the vault.
The results were:
Year 4
Kace - Floor 4th
Keira - Floor 1st, Beam 2nd and Overall placing 1st
Zeddah - Bar 4th
Year 6
Latishna- Beam 1st
Kace thought it was hard but it was amazing.

Piwakawaka Team Learner Agency
In Learner Agency you get to do fun activities like BFG Word Challenges, Hip Hop Dance, Te Rakau, BFG Drama, Ukulele, BFG Dream Mixing, Growth Mindset, Hip Hop Dancing and more.
Learner Agency is good/fun etc because we get to have some fun time and we get to learn cool and interesting stuff.
First, you have to sign up by going to your gmail and you will get a message from your teacher. It will be a form and you will have to fill it in with what day you want to go to each activities. But you can’t do two on the same day or it will not let you submit.
Then you go to your Workshops for half an hour in the afternoon and you have to recheck the spreadsheet to make sure you don’t go to the wrong class.
This term we did two Learner Agency Workshops because the Year 4s were reading a book called The BFG. We also changed because the teachers thought it was a good idea that we change.
We really like Learner Agency because we get to do fun and exciting activities.
Workshop 3:
- Ukulele
- Hip Hop Dance
- Te Rakau
- Growth Mindset
Workshop 4:
- BFG Word Challenges
- BFG Dream Mixing
- BFG Drama
- BFG Character Descriptions
In Workshop 3 we did Hip Hop Dance. At Hip Hop Dance, Mrs Prasad puts on hip hop music with people dancing so we can dance easily by looking at them.
Mr Curry did ukulele. When we went to ukelele we learned how to play the ukulele and play Singing In The Rain.
Miss Rands-Trevor did growth mindset. Miss Rands-Trevor taught us things we did not know about how we learn. She told us that when we fail at some we get a new neuron in our brain so making a mistake is actually good.
In Workshop 3, all of the activities were around our year group Read Aloud, The BFG.
We really like Learner Agency because we get to do fun and exciting activities.
Thank you for reading our description of Learner Agency.
