Growth Mindsets
Growth Mindset is also connected to Determination. If you have a growth mindset that means you are determined to reach your goals.

These are the people who are showing Determination. They are determined to finish their work. They are determined to help their buddy of the week. One buddy helps the other buddy to get the information onto the COW.

Journalistic Writing - Articles

Introduction

We have been learning how to write newspaper articles. Newspaper articles give you information about what’s going on in the country and the world.

Newspaper articles are very important because then you know what is happening.

We wrote an article about the 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony in Rio and about Olympic values.

How to write an article
We chose to write about the story of Nikki Hamblin and Abby d'Agostino

  • Firstly chose a topic that is in real life.

  • Next make a plan that suits your topic sort of like a brainstorm.

  • Now write your introduction

    Example:
A kiwi and US athlete have been commended for showing Olympic spirit after they stopped to help each other up after falling at the same time midway through their the 5000m race.

  • Use the plan to help you with your (newspaper) article.

New Zealand Minibeasts

Before we head off on our trip to the beautiful Waitakere Forest, we thought we better find out about some of the animals we would see.

No, the big mammals for us but the tiny invertebrates. The most fascinating New Zealand native we researched was the weta.

We are hoping to see some real ones when we go on our trip!

Have a look at what some of our boys have been working on using the iPads.

Sustainability - Aleluia

The children have been working on the iPads to display their knowledge about this half term's topic of Sustainability. They used the app Strip Designer to create factual poster pages.   Check out some of their work below.

Sustainable living is very important.
We have solar panels at school which help PCS be a little bit more sustainable
To make lots of electricity, power companies create wind farms with dozens of huge wind turbines

Volcanoes and geysers are examples of geothermal energy
Hydropower is not a new thing - it has been used to grind corn for thousands of years

Term 2 and Te Whare Ako

Where did our classroom go? One day it was in on spot and the next another!

During the holiday, our classroom was moved and relocated next to the fitness trail. This will be the new home of the classroom of Room 18 (and Room 16) until this time next year, while the upgrade to a Modern Learning Environment is happening in our school. We are officially a construction site.

However, you may have noticed that the children of Room 18 are not in our relocated classroom but are currently to be found working, just as hard as ever, in Te Whare Ako.

We are patiently waiting while our classroom is installed with electricity, internet and fitted with a new deck and ramp. As you can see by walking past, the workmen ar busy with their nail guns and skill saws making it so we can actually get in the door and will have somewhere to sit at lunch time.

We are having to be super organised and considerate because Te Whare Ako is a learning hub and not a classroom, which means that compared to our usual space, it feels like we are working in a shoe box.

This is a huge challenge for us but it is only until next Friday (all going to plan) and anyways, who doesn't love an adventure?
